About This Training

Sampling for total coliforms and E. coli in the water system is one of the most important things an operator can do to protect the public health of their customers.  The new Revised Total Coliform Rule (RTCR), effective April 2016, affects every public water system. These revisions to the Total Coliform Rule will affect how operators and managers respond to total coliform positives (TC+) and require steps to analyze the integrity of the system as a result of positive samples.
While the Revised Total Coliform Rule (RTCR) is a complex regulation, the actual execution of the rule can be broken down into three simple steps: plan, monitor, and respond.

Participants will learn:

  • Planning – development of a bacteriological site sampling plan that is unique to each water system.

  • Monitoring – where and how to take TCR samples that will provide the most accurate results with the fewest possible false positive samples. This module will include a hands-on demonstration of proper aseptic sampling technique.

  • Responding to results – the actions that a water system must take when confronted with positive TCR samples.  These actions include repeat sampling, finding and fixing the problem, and public notification.

The recommended audience includes operators of all experience levels.
